A Prayer for Hero Dad

In previous blogs, I wrote about things that matter in the life of dads and men.

Also watch our Father's Day message, "Things that Matter."

Dad’s play many Biblical roles in the home. I pray for you to experience the strength of God as you lead in each of them.

In your role as priest, I pray that you follow Jesus with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and model to your family what a Godly man looks like.

In your role as prophet, speak words of encouragement, destiny, and hope. The job of a prophet is to speak, and not be silent or passive. Words matter.

In your role as provider, you are wired to work. Give your best in all things, with integrity and honesty. It's doing your best, even in the small things that will make a big difference.

In your role as protector, like the people who were building the walls of Jerusalem in Nehemiah’s day, keep a sword in one hand and a trowel in another. Work hard, set the boundaries, and defend it against the enemy which wages war with your soul. Stand firm in the authority God has granted you.

In your role as lover, demonstrate what it means to keep your heart and eyes only on your wife. Love her as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.

In your role as visionary, seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, then everything else will fall into place. We can no longer afford to define our vision just in terms of building a successful career or a business. We need visions of a godly family. We are not going to finish strong by luck. We can’t afford to put our spiritual life on cruise control. You need a vision to finish strong.

Dad, you are the first tangible image of our Heavenly father that your kids see. That’s an awesome thought filled with great blessing and responsibility.

Be the hero you are called to be.

-->

In Jesus wonderful and powerful name. Amen.

Fight for What's Worth Fighting For

I'm reading Ephesians 6:10-20 about spiritual warfare and remembering that every fight is about control. This is true in our personal life, our family life, and this is also true in church life. Every church problem, every church fight and every church split is about control. When Jesus is not allowed to lead the church, there will be division.

This is why so many have been disillusioned by the church and wondered away from the faith. We have not always represented our leader, Jesus, very well.

We are in a battle. The battle is over who is in control of our minds, our hearts, our families, our church, etc.

Lord, help us to come together and surrender our hearts and our personal agendas to you. Let the church come together and fight for the things worth fighting for: healing of broken hearts, unity, peace, lost souls, families and our community.

So let it be.

Great Books on Marriage and Family

Here are four books I am recommending during our series, "Ready the House Family Edition." They are meant to be a resource for you as you strive to thrive in your marriage, not just survive.

1. Pray Big for Your Marriage is a wonderful book by Will Davis Jr. with lots of practical and specific ways to pray for your marriage and spouse. It includes a 30 day devotional guide. One chapter is specifically geared for those who have an unbelieving spouse.

2. Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerich is a classic must read for couples. It gets to the basic differences between what men and women need in a relationship.

3. Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman is another classic. It is not only helpful in marriage, but also has great insight into how people respond differently. I learned a lot about people from this book.

4. The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian is a must read for every wife. This book changed our marriage - I'll leave it at that.
